Murder bid foiled, woman among six held in Ramanathapuram

Police have foiled a murder bid with the arrest of six people, including a woman, over election rivalry at Thoppadaipatti village near Kamuthi in this southern district.

A tip off led Kovilankulam police to conduct search in the village leading to the recovery of deadly weapons, including a country-made rifle and three billhooks buried in the ground on late Sunday, said the police on Monday.

The gang had plotted to murder Pandi, who had contested for the O Karisalkulam village panchayat in Kamuthi union in the recently held rural local bodies’ election.

Pandi was defeated by Rajamani in the election and hence he had filed a case in the court challenging the victory of his opponent. This led to a rift between them. Rajamani’s daughter Selvamary who hired five thugs to kill Pandi. 

The Kovilankulam police registered a case and arrested the five goons and Selvamary. Police men were deployed to prevent any backlash in the village.
