According to the police, Janakiraman, (44) from Kuniamuthur, owned a textile mill and had incurred a financial loss. “He had borrowed around Rs one crore to recover. But his creditors were pestering him to return the money,” police said.

On Thursday night, Janakiraman came home with a bottle of pesticide and consumed it along with his wife Sasikala, (36) and two daughters Sneha (16) and Varna (14). A relative whom Janakiraman had called just before the suicide attempt rushed to his house to find the family lying unconscious.

“They were immediately rushed to a private hospital and then shifted to CMCH for further treatment. While Sasikala died, the businessman and his two daughters are in a critical condition,” police said.

Inquiries are on to know if Janakiraman faced any harassment from his debtors. The Kuniamuthur police have registered a case under IPC 309 for attempt to commit suicide.
