CHENNAI: A low-pressure area is likely to form over south Andaman Sea on December 5 will bring rains to coastal Tamil Nadu from Friday, said the Regional Meteorological Centre on Wednesday. In addition, Chennai and its suburb are expected to receive moderate rain for the next 48 hours.
Light to moderate easterlies and northeasterly prevail in the lower tropospheric levels over the region. A cyclonic circulation is likely to emerge over south Andaman Sea on December 4, and under its influence, a low-pressure area is expected to form over the same area during the subsequent 24 hours.
From December 3, coastal districts of Tamil Nadu, including Chennai, Chengalpattu, Villupuram, Cuddalore, Mayildathurai, Nagapattinam, Ramanathapuram and Kanniyakumari are likely to receive light to moderate rain along with thunderstorm activity. After the low-pressure area is formed over the south Andaman Sea on Monday, southern parts and interior districts of Tamil Nadu is expected to get rain, until the system moves.
As far as Chennai, due to variations in the speed of the easterly wind, some areas in the city to receive light rain during the evening hours for the next 48 hours. The maximum and minimum temperatures to record around 31 degree Celsius and 23 degree Celsius respectively at Nungambakkam and Meenambakkam weather stations respectively.
In the last 24 hours, the highest amount of rainfall was recorded in Tirunelveli 9 cm, followed by Virudhunagar 7 cm, The Nilgiris, and Tenkasi 6 cm each, Kanniyakumari 5 cm, Thoothukudi, and Coimbatore received 3 cm rainfall each, as per RMC data.
