TIRUCHY: A father-son duo were killed by lightning while they were involved in draining rainwater from their field in the wee hours of Monday.

Sources said that, there was sudden heavy rain across the Delta region on Monday early morning. Anbarasan (55), a resident from Sathanur near Mannargudi, who had sowed Thalady paddy in his field, along with this son Arul Murugan (30) had gone to the field around 1 am to check the condition of the crops. As there was water stagnating in the field, the father-son duo began to drain it out to avoid damage to the paddy.

During the course, both were struck by lightning and killed on the spot. Family members and relatives searched for them as they did not return for a long time.

In the daybreak, some farmers of neighbouring fields saw both Anbarasan and Arul Murugan charred to death. Soon they passed on the information to their family members, who rushed to the spot and retrieved the bodies with the help of the police.

Vaduvur police have registered a case and are investigating.
