Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami, Deputy Chief Minister O Panneerselvam and senior cabinet ministers placed wreaths on the memorial and paid homage.
Leader of Opposition and DMK president MK Stalin, MDMK general secretary Vaiko, senior BJP leaders Pon Radhakrishnan and H Raja, Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam leader TTV Dhinakaran, AIFB leader PV Kathiravan, All India Moovendar Munnani Kazhagam president Dr S Sethuraman and leaders of various political parties and caste-based outfits also paid their homage.
The Guru Puja of Thevar is being observed as an official function of the state government every year. His birth anniversary and death anniversary falls on the same date.
Thousands of people, including women and children belonging to the dominant Thevar community from various parts of the state also thronged the memorial and paid homage.
A large number of men and children tonsured their heads, while women took out processions from different parts to the memorial carrying milk pots and “mulapari” (germinated sprouts of grains) and offered their worship at the memorial. Police made elaborate security arrangements in this caste-sensitive district in view of the Guru Puja.
