Laptops given to Vellore students

The Tamil Nadu government’s abiding interest in the welfare of school students was the reason why government freebies like lap tops and cycles were distributed to students for free despite the government facing a financial crunch, said state commercial taxes minister KC Veeramani while distributing laptops to students here on Wednesday.

The government’s interest in school students was seen from the fact that education was accorded nearly 20% of the annual budget this year, he added.

On Thursday, as many as 23,479 laptops were distributed to students of Vellore city schools at an estimated Rs.2.94 crore.

Vellore district saw 34,075 laptops being distributed to students of 210 schools in 2016-17 at a cost of Rs 42.25 crore. The district was also given a total of 1.68 lakh laptops in five years between 2011 and 2016.
