TIRUCHY: Tensions arose as students of Kumbakonam Government Fine Arts College staged a sit-in protest on Thursday against the state government’s proposal to establish a Tangedco substation in the college premises and demanded proper basic amenities instead.

According to the protesting students, space crunch, lack of sufficient number of classrooms and laboratories have been a persistent issue.

They noted that they have been conducting a series of protests for their basic infrastructure facilities for the past few years, as the state government has not initiated any steps so far.

In such a backdrop, the government has identified a spot at the college premises to establish a 33/11 kV substation, which would likely hinder other infrastructure works in the college.

On Thursday, the students boycotted their classes and staged a sit-in in protest, demanding that the proposal be withdrawn.

On information, the Kumbakonan Tahsildar Poongodi rushed to the spot and held talks with the agitating students.

The students demanded additional classrooms in the spot identified for the substation and submitted a petition to the Tahsildar.
