Interim bail for cop jailed in Sathankulam custodial deaths case

The Madurai Bench of Madras High Court on Thursday granted three days’ interim bail to jailed head constable X Thomas Francis, accused in the alleged custodial deaths case in Thoothukudi district last year.

The accused petitioner constable Francis, in an interim bail plea before Justice M Nirmal Kumar, cited the wedding of his brother as the reason for seeking bail. The wedding is scheduled for January 11 at Meignanapuram in Thoothukudi district.

The judge granted three days’ interim bail effecting from 11 a.m. on January 10 to 5 p.m. on January 12.

The judge also directed the local police jurisdiction to provide adequate security to the cop.

Thomas Francis is one of the ten accused in the alleged custodial deaths of P Jeyaraj and his son J Bennix, who were traders in Sathankulam, Thoothukudi district, in June last year.

In October last, the cop was granted a three-day interim bail to attend the final rites of his father. Besides, bail plea hearing of other jailed cop Raghu Ganesh in the case, has been adjourned.
