COIMBATORE: A 37-year-old guest worker, who had gathered to catch a glimpse of actor turned politician Vijay, fainted to death outside the meeting venue in Salem on Friday.

Police said Suraj, a native of Maharashtra, was among the large crowd gathered outside the meeting venue at Seelanaickenpatti to see Vijay, despite the participants being limited to 5000 for the meeting.

Suddenly, Suraj collapsed, and he was immediately rushed to a private hospital by an ambulance parked at the venue. Doctors, however, found him to have died already.

Police said Suraj had settled in Seelanaickenpatti with his family over the last 20 years and was employed as a silversmith at a smithy. Police said Suraj, who is survived by his wife Priyanka and two children, had skipped work to see Vijay.

Police said Suraj had undergone heart surgery and is likely to have collapsed due to long hours of exposure to heat.
