HC asks 40 ROs to submit reports on recounting of votes

The Madras High Court on Friday asked for reports from about 40 returning officers (RO)s whether they conducted recounting of votes as per the requests, if not the reason for the same in recently-concluded rural body election.

Justice PD Audikesavalu passed the interim order on the batch of petitions alleging that the retuning officers have not recounted votes in some wards where a request for recounting has been made as per the provisions of Panchayat Election Rules. The judge also observed that the court would direct departmental action against returning officers if it is found that they did not follow the rules.


The judge also heard another plea moved by the DMK seeking direction to the State Election Commission to videograph with audio recording the entire proceedings of the indirect election to the posts of chairperson and vice-chairperson of district panchayat council and panchayat union council. When the plea came up for hearing, the court recorded that the undertaking of the election commission that it will provide three-tier protection and video recording of the election without audio recording.


Cooperative societies polls to be held on Feb 3

Meanwhile, the Tamil Nadu State Cooperative Election Commission (TNSCEC) on Friday announced elections for 1,024 cooperative societies across the state onFebruary 3.


According to a statement from the TNSCEC, “Elections would be conducted for 1,028 cooperative societies, including 505 newly registered primary milk producers’ cooperative societies and 517 primary milk producers’ cooperative societies for which the tenure of five years has ended.”


The elections would be held for the posts of governing council members, president and vice president. In total, 11,368 governing council members would be elected.
