Selvaraj (75) served as the Combined Tiruchy district secretary from 1987 to 1993. He was elected as the Tiruchy MP between 1980 and 1984 before he aligned with Vaiko when the latter split from DMK and formed MDMK.

He returned to DMK in 2006 and contested and won from Musiri assembly segment before he became the minister for forest in the DMK government between 2006 and 2011.

Selvaraj had joined AIADMK in the presence of late Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa when the DMK denied him a ticket to contest the elections. However, DMK president MK Stalin who was in Tiruchy last week, had visited the ailing Selvaraj at the hospital.
