The members, led by D Puthiyavan, the district organiser of the party, stated in their complaint that Rajinikanth, during his speech at the 50th anniversary celebrations of the weekly magazine, Thuglak, claimed that in the rally organised by Periyar in 1971 in Salem, Lord Rama and Sita were taken in a procession in an insulting manner. “This is absolutely a lie and this would mar the peaceful atmosphere in the state,” the members claimed in the complaint.

The members charged that Rajinikanth had misguided the people with his false information about the rally organised by Periyar. He also maligned the reputation of Periyar, the father of the Dravidian movement and the most venerated leader of self-respect, who fought for equality of the people in the state as well as across the nation. They demanded that the actor be booked under the IPC Sections 153 A (wanton vilification or attacks upon the religion, race, place of birth, residence, language etc. of any particular group or class or upon the founders) and 505 (offence against any other class or community) and initiate legal action against him and arrest the actor.

Meanwhile, reports said that cases were filed against the actor for the 'defamatory comment' in districts including Erode, Salem, Chennai, Namakkal and Coimbatore.
