According to the police, Madayyan (50), a trader in Krishnagiri district, was told by a Salem-based trader who stayed in Madayyan’s lodge that he could help Madayyan get gold for reduced rate from a person whom he knew in Gudiyattam.

This was subsequent to Madayyan telling the trader that he needed to buy gold jewels for his daughter’s wedding. The trader then gave him a phone number and upon Madayyan contacting that person, was told that gold jewellery worth Rs 25 lakh would be arranged and asked Madayyan to come to Gudiyattam.

Madayyan on reaching the spot spotted two men who told him that they had only gold coins worth Rs 50 lakh and not jewels. While Madayyan said he only had Rs 25 lakh, the duo convinced him that he could have the gold coins weighing about 2.50 kilograms for that amount. After the transaction, Madayyan became suspicious when the two men left the spot in a hurry after receiving the cash. When he checked, he found that the ‘gold’ coins were fake and made of copper. He complained to the police who are investigating.
