CHENNAI: A 27-year-old man was hacked to death by a duo inside a private college in Vandalur on Tuesday morning. The deceased was identified as Manikandan of Keerapakkam near Vandalur, who was working as a driver in a private college there.

Police said Manikandan used to drive the college principal’s car and during emergencies, he would also drive ambulances.

On Monday, Manikandan had left for work and returned only in the early hours the next day. Around 4 am, Manikandan left the house after receiving a call from the college to drive an ambulance for a medical emergency. Two hours later, he returned to the college and slept in the staff hostel.

Around 7 am, two youngsters on a bike entered the college, went into the hostel and began attacking Manikandan using a sickle and knife. Manikandan died on the spot. After confirming that he was dead, the duo fled the spot on the bike.

Soon, the Kilambakkam police visited the spot and sent the body for post-mortem to Chromepet GH. They have registered a case and are trying to identify the murderers with the help of CCTV.

The police questioned the security guards at the gate as to how they could allow strangers into the hostel. The guards told the cops that the duo had wanted to meet Manikandan. Police are investigating whether the duo were regular visitors to the college or Manikandan’s friends.

Manikandan had earlier worked as a security guard in the same college and later, promoted as driver.
