‘Doubting’ donors question selfless youth in Vellore

Five altruistic youth, who extended their weekend social service activities to areas outside Vellore, experienced a rather unusual treatment from donors.

In a mistaken identity, the donors thinking that the youth were full-time social activists, started to behave rudely, sometimes even ordering them.

Led by software engineer Dinesh Saravanan, the youth collected old usable clothes from 10 houses in Vellore town and donated them to fifty needy homeless nomads in Kangeyanallur near Katpadi and at Pootuthakku and Tiruvalam.

When collecting old clothes, the donors not understanding that all were working youngsters who undertook social service only during weekends, used stern language to make sure that the clothes reached the targeted people.

“The donors were particular that we do not indulge in any hanky-panky activities,” Dinesh Saravanan said. This was an unwanted doubt the donors had especially when the team members Dhandapani and Karthik worked for reputed firms. Dhandapani worked in Vellore Integrated Court Complex at Sathuvachari and Karthik worked in a mechanical field in Bengaluru.

Another surprise was in store for them when they cleaned up around 200 metres of empty land in front of the Panchayat Union Middle School at Arapakkam about 8 kilometres from Vellore on the Chennai highway.

They found the soil to be wet due to inflow of water and when they checked they found that a tap inside the school was leaking and had been in the same condition for more than a year.

They now plan to plant around 10 neem saplings in the cleaned area in two weeks when the soil has been readied, they concluded.
