CHENNAI: A petition has been filed before the Madras High Court seeking a direction to the Directorate of Enforcement to register a case against BJP state president Nainar Nagenthran in connection with the seizure of Rs 3.98 crore from the Nellai Express during the Lok Sabha elections of 2024.

Cash was seized at Tambaram Railway Station while allegedly being transported for distribution to voters in the Tirunelveli constituency, where Nainar Nagenthran had contested.

DMK Rajya Sabha MP R Girirajan filed the petition before the Madras High Court. In the petition, he sought action against Tamil Nadu BJP state president N Nainar Nagendran and former BJP State Organisation General Secretary Kesava Vinayagam. His petition stated that the CB-CID had already registered a case in relation to the incident.

It was submitted that the materials collected during the investigation disclose the commission of serious cognisable offences, including conspiracy and cheating. Despite the existence of clear materials indicating the generation and use of proceeds of crime, the Enforcement Directorate has failed to register an Enforcement Case Information Report (ECIR) and initiate proceedings under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, 2002 (PMLA).

The plea further argues that a preliminary inquiry is mandatory and seeks a direction to the Enforcement Directorate to register a case and proceed in accordance with law, while also alleging inaction due to the political affiliation of the persons concerned.

The matter is expected to be listed for hearing shortly.
