The Congress on Thursday demanded disqualification of its legislator Dhanavelou elected from Bahour for revolting against the party and government. The MLA levelled corruption charges against Chief Minister and Ministers earlier.

Government whip RKR Anantaraman submitted a petition to Assembly Speaker Sivakolundhu seeking his disqualification. He later told reporters that as Dhanavelou continued to indulge in “anti-party” and “anti-government” activities, as the government whip he had submitted the petition to the Speaker to disqualify him.

Talking to reporters, PCC president A Namassivayam said Dhanavelou was elected from Bahour on the Congress ticket in 2016. However, he continues to indulge in “anti-party” and “anti-government” activities and hence, he was temporarily suspended from the party. Dhanavelou had also submitted his reply to a show cause notice.

However, he continued to adopt the same stance against the party and government and took out a procession and submitted a memorandum to Lt Governor Kiran Bedi seeking to dismiss the Congress government. Hence, Anantharaman has sought the disqualification of Dhanavelou under the Anti-Defection Act,” he said.

To a question, Namassivayam said that the “entire Cabinet is ready to resign” if Dhanavelou could prove his charges with adequate evidences.
