COIMBATORE: The discharge from Stanley Reservoir in Mettur dam continued to be around 1.95 lakh cusecs for the second consecutive day on Monday resulting in flooding in several districts. More than 1,000 people, who were shifted to relief camps from flooded areas in Erode, Salem and Namakkal, continued their stay in the temporary shelter. The water realised at Biligundlu, the entry point of Cauvery into Tamil Nadu slowed down to 1.55 lakh cusecs on Monday evening. From 1.85 lakh cusecs on Sunday, the water flow came down to 1.65 lakh cusecs on Monday 2 pm and further down to 1.55 lakh cusecs in the evening. Meanwhile, rain related mishaps claimed the lives of two elderly women in separate incidents in Salem. Both the women were buried alive in the rubble after damp walls of their house collapsed due to continuous rains.Police said Seerangayi, (80), who was living alone after her husband passed away a few years ago, died while sleeping after the wall of her house with thatched roofing collapsed at Thippampatti village near Panamarathupatti on Sunday night. Panamarathupatti police recovered her body and sent it for a post-mortem to Salem Government Hospital. In another incident, Rani (65) from Mettu Street in Edappadi panchayat died after the wall of her house fell on her early on Monday. She was staying alone in the house. Edappadi police have sent the body for post-mortem to Salem GH and further inquiries are on.
