Coimbatore firms fined for failing to clear garbage

COIMBATORE: The Coimbatore Corporation on Wednesday imposed fines totalling Rs 10 lakh on private firms for failing to clear garbage and for not restoring the road dug out for laying water pipelines.

During an inspection, Corporation Commissioner Sivaguru Prabakaran found a pile-up of uncleared garbage at the GV Residency area in Sowripalayam in the East Zone.

Taking a serious note of the lapse, the Commissioner imposed a penalty of Rs five lakh on the private contractor for waste collection. He also directed officials to ensure the immediate removal of the accumulated garbage.

Similarly, the commissioner imposed a Rs 5 lakh fine on a private firm implementing the 24-hour drinking water supply scheme for not restoring the road after digging out for laying pipelines for water supply.

City Health Officer A Mohan, Assistant City Health Officer K Boopathi, Assistant Commissioner (East Zone) C Ram Kumar and other officials accompanied the commissioner during the inspection.
