To help the political parties, Saturday which is usually a holiday is now a working day to accept the nomination papers, an informed state official said adding that the final tally of nominations would easily cross the 60,000 mark.

In a communique to district election officers, Tamil Nadu State Election Commission (TNSEC) directed those on poll duty to be available for receiving nominations on Saturday (December 14). The last date for submitting the nominations will be on December 16.

According to a statement from TNSEC as many as 16,360 aspirants submitted their nomination papers on Thursday. Over the past four days a total of 38,015 nomination papers have been received, the release said.

Meanwhile, the AIADMK had also formed a committee comprising senior officials to discuss the seat-sharing with its alliance partners. The BJP and DMDK have already commenced their first phase of talks with AIADMK.

VCK raises ambiguity in SC order

In a political development related to civic polls, VCK leader Villupuram MP D Ravikumar, on Thursday, raised ambiguity on Supreme Court judgment related to local body polls. “Supreme Court in its judgment stated that delimitation of wards should be completed in three months based on 2011 census. When the judgment is clear how can SEC conduct local body polls and will not amount to contempt of court,” questioned Ravikumar, in a tweet.

He also said that the Supreme Court judgment was released only on Thursday, but how did Election Commission on Wednesday release a press communique stating that Supreme Court had permitted the conduct of local body polls.

However, informed state officials said that the apex court in the previous order dated December 6 had allowed the TNSEC to go ahead with model code of conduct and noted that there is no stay or any interim injunction for the conduct of polls.
