Sources revealed that he arrived in Tiruvannamalai on January 20 to worship at the Arulmigu Arunachaleswarar temple and that he resorted to living in a cave atop the Kandasahraman as local lodges refused him accommodation due to his mongoloid features and as he said he was from Beijing.
Having no other go, the man, identified as Yang Ruii, found a cave and started living there. When this was noticed by the forest officials – the hill is out of bounds for local, Indian and foreign devotees – they chased him from the cave, following which he reached the foothills near Ramanashramam and sought help at the Foreigners Help Desk, maintained by the Police Department there.
The 35-year-old demanded that he either be sent home or be provided with food and shelter till the lockdown was lifted in the country.
The help desk officials contacted Collector KS Kandasamy, who ordered that he be checked for coronavirus based on which the man was shifted to a private hospital while his blood samples have been sent for analysis
