CHENNAI: Five girl students of a government school in Tiruporur were injured after the ceiling of their classroom collapsed, which triggered protests from parents who raised questions about the quality of construction.
The Government Higher Secondary School in Siruthavur village has more than 350 students. Around 2 pm on Thursday, a part of the ceiling of the Class 10 room collapsed. There were 48 students inside the classroom, of whom five girls suffered injuries.
They were rushed to the Tiruporur government hospital in an ambulance. Police sources said two students returned home after first aid, while Suji, Prathikshaw and Tamilrasi were admitted with multiple injuries.
Learning about the accident, the parents and the public gathered at the school and started questioning the quality of the construction which was done only seven years ago. They staged a protest seeking to demolish the structure and rebuild it, stating that they could not risk their children’s lives.
Following the protest, Chengalpattu district education officer, Tiruporur Panchayat Union Commissioner and Revenue Department officials came to the school and pacified the parents with the promise that the building would be inspected and action would be taken accordingly.
Meanwhile, the officials temporarily moved students of classes 9 and 10 to a nearby building.
