CBI seeks 5-day custody of five suspended cops

The CBI team has filed a petitione in the Chief Judicial Magistrate Court in Madurai on Monday seeking custody of the jailed Inspector and four other cops in connection with Sathankulam custodial deaths.

The CBI in its petition sought five days custody of five jailed policemen who have been charged with murdering the dad-son duo. However, the CJM adjourned the case to Tuesday.

 Earlier, the CB-CID, which undertook the probe into the alleged custodial deaths of P Jayaraj (58) and his son J Bennix (31), arrested five cops including suspended Inspector Srithar, SIs – Raghu Ganesh and Balakrishnan, Murugan, head constable and Muthuraj, constable.

 The CBI after taking over the probe, filed two FIRs and registered murder charges against the five cops.

 The father –son duo were picked up by the Sathankulam police on June 19 for lockdown violation. Both were allegedly tortured during their detention at Sathankulam police station and later shifted to Kovilpatti sub-jail. As their condition worsened, both were moved to hospital, where Bennix died on June 22 and Jeyaraj the next morning.

 Meanwhile, bail plea of the jailed Inspector Srithar and Sub Inspector Balakrishnan came up for hearing before the Thoothukudi Principal Sessions Court on Monday. While Srithar withdrew his plea the bail petition of Balakrishnan was posted for hearing on Tuesday.
