While teasers and trailers of various Kollywood flicks were released last week, Kabilan Vairamuthu’s documentary, Ilaignargal Ennum Naam, was perhaps the most-talked about.
It conveys the activities of an organisation, Makkal Anukka Peravai (MAP), that was formed by Kabilan and his friends in early 2000. The team that started with less than 10 people, grew upto 10,000 members. “Ilaignargal Ennum Naam, is a documentary which talks about our past. The kind of activities we were involved in.
For instance, we provided basics amenities to schools and created environmental awareness,” says Kabilan. A portion of the documentary also stresses on the need to have a healthy political climate. “Our youngsters have always spoken out when they needed to be heard. Jallikattu issue is a classic example. Youngsters have the power to bring about change but they need a clean environment before they can do so,” he adds.
Kabilan also says that “P-schools” are the need of the hour to streamline politics in the state. “Like B-schools, we need schools that can teach youngsters about politics, which can be called P-schools.
In the documentary, we haven’t spoken much about P-schools as we are in the primary stage of planning. It is to be understood that P-schools are not platforms that can land these youngsters in a high paying job. It will be a constructive medium for them to learn about new age social work, politics and political fitness. I call it political fitness because protests should ripen to progressive politics to bring about a change.
In order to engage youngsters in politics, we released this on social media as this will reach more youngsters,” he explains in detail. A trailer over two minutes, it was released by director KV Anand last month and AR Murugadoss released the documentary a few days ago.
“We were working on putting this video together while I was working on Kavan. So KV Anand came forward to release the trailer, while Murugadoss agreed to release the documentary without a second thought.”
For the nonce though, he says that the current political scenario is quite challenging. “The road ahead is not a bed of roses for sure. However, we will look to cross these hurdles and bring about a positive change,” he concludes.
