The students have been staging a road-roko and a sit-in protest in front of the college since August 24. They also submitted a petition regarding the same to the Collector. During the protests they demanded action against faculty of the college for allegedly abetting a student to commit suicide.

Dinesh Kumar, a student of the college committed suicide on August 23 after he was suspended. His death triggered a protest by students of the college demanding action against the faculty of the department and college authorities.

On Monday, Modakurichi MLA VP Sivasubramani met the students and assured that action would be initiated against the college authorities after an inquiry. The students decided to wrap up their protest after the MLA informed them that no action would be initiated against them for protesting.

However, on Monday, the Modakurichi police took Sabapathy, a third-year student of English Literature Department for an inquiry for spearheading the protest. Following this, the students against began their protest by boycotting classes on Tuesday.

They sought Sabapathy’s release and said that protests will continue until an action is taken against the college authorities. Later, Sabapathy was released.
