CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president K Selvaperunthagai on Friday strongly criticised the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance, alleging that it was forcibly stitched together to help the BJP gain a foothold in Tamil Nadu and accusing the Union government of pursuing a sustained anti-Tamil Nadu agenda.

In a statement, Selvaperunthagai said the alliance's first public appearance, formed by pressuring the AIADMK to accommodate the BJP, took place at Madurantakam.
He questioned whether the combine should be called the AIADMK alliance or the NDA, stating that confusion persisted and that it was an opportunistic alliance of parties with conflicting ideologies.
Referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's address at the meeting, he said the PM devoted most of his speech to attacking the DMK-Congress alliance, which, he alleged, exposed the BJP's inability to accept that Tamil Nadu remained one of the strongest states opposing it.
He recalled that the people of Tamil Nadu had decisively rejected the BJP in the 2019 and 2024 Lok Sabha elections by not allowing the party to win even a single seat.

He added that although Tamil Nadu contributed Rs 7.38 lakh crore in taxes over the past seven years, it received only Rs 2.56 lakh crore in return.
Concluding his statement, Selvaperunthagai said that irrespective of the number of visits by the Prime Minister and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, the people of Tamil Nadu would deliver a fitting reply to the BJP’s alleged anti-state policies in the 2026 Assembly elections.
