CHENNAI: Chief Minister MK Stalin on Thursday expressed serious concern over the increasing incidents of violence and hate speech against minorities across the country, stating that such developments threaten social harmony and constitutional values.

Stalin said the true strength and character of the majority are reflected in its ability to ensure that minorities lived without fear. "When a few right-wing violent groups, acting in the name of the majority, indulge in attacks and riots, even as the Prime Minister participates in Christmas celebrations, it sends a disturbing message to the nation," he said in a social media post.

Referring to the ethnic violence that broke out in Manipur in 2023 between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities and the reports of attacks on minorities in places such as Jabalpur and Raipur, the chief minister said such incidents are unacceptable in a plural and democratic society.

CM Stalin pointed to reports indicating a 74 per cent rise in hate speech against minorities in 2024 alone, under the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre, calling it a grave and alarming trend.

Stressing the need for decisive action, Stalin said curbing divisive and riotous groups that seek to fracture society is a shared and urgent responsibility. He urged the authorities to act with firm resolve to uphold justice, equality, and the constitutional promise of unity in diversity.
