CHENNAI: Due to prevailing upper air circulation over the Tamil Nadu region, 20 districts are likely to receive heavy rains for the next three days, as predicted by the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC).
Officials stated that the wet weather will continue in the city, and the maximum temperature is expected to decrease further than normal.
"The prevailing atmospheric circulation in TN region and strong westerly winds, heavy rain along with thunderstorm activity is likely to occur over Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Tirupur, Theni, Dindigul, Erode, Karur, Namakkal, Salem, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Tirupattur, Vellore, Tiruchy, Kallakurichi, Perambalur, Cuddalore, Theni and Villupuram districts of Tamil Nadu, " said a senior RMC official.
Several areas in Chennai and suburbs including Egmore, Anna Nagar, Ambattur, Chrompet, Porur, and Vandalur experienced light to moderate rain on Friday. It is likely to continue and isolated places are expected to receive heavy rain due to strong westerly winds.
The maximum temperature at Nungambakkam and Meenambakkam weather stations decreased by 3 degree Celsius, recorded 27 degree Celsius and 29 degree Celsius respectively.
A weather blogger commented, "Some intense thunderstorms developing around the interior parts of Tamil Nadu along the convergence zone / North South Trough line. Due to weak wind steering places coming under, could see intense spells of rain."
According to RMC, during the last 24 hours, the highest amount of rainfall recorded in Nilgiris was 9 cm, Tiruvallur, Thoothukudi, Tirupattur, Krishnagiri, Salem, Cuddalore recorded 7 cm of rainfall each, Tiruchy, Kancheepuram, and Dharmapuri received 6 cm rainfall each.
