According to police, Subramaniam, 61, from Avinashi poured a can of kerosene over his body, standing near a defunct borewell at Periyayipalayam.

Shocked villagers snatched away the kerosene can from him and informed the Avinashi station police. The police immediately rushed to the spot and inquiries revealed that Subramaniam took the extreme step, demanding the administration to close the unused borewell. The officials then took efforts to cap the borewell.

The state government has already been on a drive to close all the defunct borewells to prevent any further life loss.
