16 injured during Manjuvirattu held sans permission in Sivagangai

MADURAI: Sixteen persons, including tamers and spectators, were injured during Manjuvirattu, which was conducted illegally at Keelakottai near Kallal in Sivaganga district on Thursday.

Usually, the bull taming contest is held on New Year's Day, and the contest is conducted according to local tradition by some of the villagers. Injuries to the tamers were not serious, sources said. Over 300 bulls from parts of Sivaganga, Ramanathapuram, Madurai, Pudukottai and Tiruchy participated.

After the incident came to the knowledge of a Veterinary officer in Paganeri, the Madagupatti police were alerted to file a case.

Moreover, sources said some villagers of Keelasevalpatti in Thirupathur block are planning to conduct Manjuvirattu on January 2 without getting prior permission from officials.

Therefore, the police were informed to initiate action against any of those violating the norms.
