CHENNAI: A 38-year-old woman jumped into a well along with her eight-year-old daughter in Tirukazhukundram in Chengalpattu district early on Sunday, the police said.

The deceased were identified as Geetha and her daughter, Subasri. Geetha was employed with a private IT company and got married to Arunkumar of Walajahpet in 2008.

The police sources said the couple had been living separately for the past five years and a divorce case is pending at court. The husband allegedly wanted his wife to leave her job to manage the family, police sources said. The investigations revealed that the woman was also undergoing medical treatment for depression.

Geetha had been staying at her sister's house in Chennai and commuting to work. She regularly visits her parents' house in Tirukazhukundram on weekends to see her daughter.

On Sunday morning, when family members went to check on her, she was found missing. A search was launched, following which Geetha and her daughter were found unconscious in a well located about 500 metres from the residence. They were rushed to the Chengalpattu Government Hospital, where both of them were declared dead.

Tirukazhukundram police have registered a case and are investigating.
