Woman attempts suicide after theft probe in Chennai

CHENNAI: A 29-year-old woman who was investigated by the Foreshore estate police on suspicion of theft attempted suicide at her residence in Srinivasa Nagar near Mylapore on Friday night.

The woman is undergoing treatment at the Government Royapettah Hospital. The police sources said that the woman, identified as Haseena, was suspected of having stolen at least eight sovereigns of gold jewellery from the house of a businessman where she worked as a domestic help.

She had quit the job a few weeks ago. On learning about the missing jewellery, her erstwhile employer had invited her home on the pretext of asking her to take old clothes and questioned her about the jewellery and then alerted the police. Haseena was then taken to the police station for further enquiry and let off.

The woman, who was reportedly distressed after the incident, returned home and attempted suicide. Her family members rescued her and moved her to the Government Royapettah Hospital.
