The vendors, however, said the prices of a few vegetables could again go up in the coming days by 10 to 15 per cent as there could be a shortage of vegetables arriving in the market.

“As the market started receiving vegetable truckloads from Sunday, compared to the last few days, the vegetable prices have come down by 10 per cent. From the day of opening, the market has been receiving a steady supply of farm produce as expected, which has curtailed the rising price of vegetables,” said P Sukumaran, Secretary, Koyambedu Wholesale Market Merchants’ Association.

“Maybe in the next few days, the prices of a few vegetables like tomatoes and broad beans might go up as there might be a shortage. Already the vegetables are getting dried up because of the summer heat,” he added.

Currently, onion is being sold for Rs 15–20 per kg, tomato for Rs 15 per kg, beans Rs 40-60, broad beans Rs 30, carrot Rs 15–20, radish Rs 15–20, cabbage Rs 10 and ladies finger Rs 20 per kg.

Meanwhile, some of the vendors complained that though it has been more than a week since Tirumazhisai market started functioning, the authorities are yet to ensure proper facilities there. The vendors complain that there have been frequent power cuts from the day the market started functioning.

“There is no proper shelter. If it rains in the coming days, it would be difficult for us to manage because the water will start entering the shops. Also, there were frequent power cuts at the market during the daytime in the last week,” said a vendor.
