Vandalur zoo gets seven new bird species

Arignar Anna Zoological Park at Vandalur has got seven new birds species that would be displayed for public view – Scarlet Macaw, Catelina Macaw, Harlequin Macaw, Severe Macaw, Dusky Pionus, Ruppell’s Parrot and Orange Winged Amazon.

Most of these birds are commonly found in Central and South American countries, said a statement from the zoo, adding that the ones at the zoo were rescued from local sources and quarantined for a stipulated period at a veterinary hospital to ensure good health. 

The zoo officials said these new additions to the bird collection are expected to attract more visitors. Vandalur Zoo houses 1,604 birds belonging to 89 species. 

While 61 of them are native varieties, 28 are exotic breeds.
