Right through the day, there were intense debate and noisy scenes as the Opposition tried to pick holes on some of the Government’s action, including maintenance of law and order. However, towards the end of the day, uproarious scenes were witnessed following a remark made by Minister O S Maniam, resulting in DMK members trooping into the well of the house demanding that the remarks should be expunged.

When DMK Deputy Leader Duraimurugan was speaking on the budget debate, he said the law and order was not under the control of the Government. He also made some remarks on the issue, which was expunged by Speaker P Dhanapal. As the DMK members protested and were on their feet, the Minister, intervened and pointed out to some of the incidents that took place during the previous DMK regime. This triggered angry reaction from the DMK members, who took serious objection to it and demanded that the Minister’s remarks should be expunged. This led to a war of words between the members of the ruling AIADMK and the DMK, who were on their feet.

DMK MLA J Anbazhagan and others rushed to the well of the House and picked up a direct argument with the Chair. Leader of the Opposition M K Stalin and Duraimurugan too argued with the Chair and demanded that the Minister’s remarks should also be expunged. But the Speaker did not concede their demands and condemned the way the DMK members were conducting themselves in the House. Earlier, Panneerselvam, intervening P K Sekar Babu (DMK) said the State remained a haven of peace and that crime rates have come down drastically during the AIADMK regime as the police were given a free hand to deal with trouble makers. He also said that police have effectively solved crimes such as techie Swathi murder case, RTI activist Parasmal Jain’s killing and advocate’s Murugan murder.
