The National Policy for Children was adopted in 2013 after due consultation with the stakeholders across the nation and the Centre had directed all the state governments to form a Child Policy of their own. The policy is supposed to cover areas like children’s survival, health, nutrition, development, education and protection.
Based on the recommendations from the Centre, TNCPCR had organised an introductory meeting in March, 2015, in which representatives from various sectors put forth their suggestions. Subsequently, a final round of framing of policy was organised recently in Chennai, which notified several recommendations to be included in the policy. In order to ensure the participation of beneficiaries in the process, TNCPCR has decided to get the views to finalise the policy.
The commission has planned to meet the children and get their opinions and needs. TNCPCR sources said the participation of the children would make them aware of their rights and open up about their expectations. “We have planned to meet the students from mid-July at private, government and welfare schools for which we have approached the Education Department of each district. The commission, other child welfare organisations would organise a meeting in which the views of the children would be discussed and included in the report to table it before the state government,” T Jayanthi Rani, Member TNCPCR said.
