The deceased Tamil Selvan was a final-year BCom student of a private college in Thandalam and resident of Bhagyalakshmi Nagar.

Police said Tamil Selvan recently received State government’s Rs 2,500 Pongal gift from the PDS shop, but gave only Rs 500 to his father Chinna Thambi, a daily wage labourer, on Sunday. When questioned about the remaining sum, Tamil Selvan reportedly told his father that he spent the money on his friends and was scolded for it.

Around 5 pm, Tamil Selvan suddenly jumped into the well when his grandmother alone was present at home. She heard an unusual sound and peeked into the well to find her grandson struggling in the water.

She raised an alarm and neighbours after a futile effort to rescue him informed the Fire and Rescue Services, Ambattur station. Though fire personnel rushed to the spot, Tamil Selvan had drowned by then. His body was sent to Kilpauk Medical College Hospital for postmortem.

On information, Maduravoyal police registered a case and further investigation is on.
