What is unique about sarees from TN?

Kancheepuram sarees are a pleasure to wear with rich colours and intricate designs taken from glorious palette of temple designs. The average age of a Kancheepuram saree weaver now is about 60 years. The youngsters are not interested in continuing the family trade. Many do not find it financially viable. While industrialisation is necessary, I strongly feel that it should not be at the cost of the weavers. Marketing should be streamlined and making the trade it financially viable for the weavers should be on top of the agenda.

What is the relevance of handwoven textiles in today’s world?

The world is beginning to appreciate handmade and handwoven items. Yet India takes it for granted. We have a 5000-year-old history of textiles. No other country can boast of a textile tradition such as ours. Awareness is the challenge. How many of us really care to look beyond the garment we are wearing to find where it has come from and what is the story behind it.

Are you looking at other regions in the country for community development activities?

Yes that was my original plan. But Varanasi took a lot of effort.
