Speeding bus kills 2 in Chengalpattu

Two persons, including a woman and a two-wheeler rider, were killed and 10 others were injured after a private bus lost control and hit them while racing with a government bus in Chengalpattu on Sunday.

The deceased were identified as Santhanam (38) of Chengalpattu and Valarmathi (40), who was waiting for a bus at the bus stand on the Chengalpattu bypass. Santhanam died on the spot, while the woman rushed to the Chengalpattu GH, along with 10 others, died at the hospital. 

The private bus was carrying 30 people for a wedding at Mamandoor from Kelambakkam via Chengalpattu when the accident happened. 

The driver of the bus fled the spot immediately after the incident. 

According to the police, the private bus and a government bus were racing each other on Sunday. “It looks like the private bus lost control, hit the bike rider and then knocked down the people who were waiting at the bus stand. Then, it slipped from the road to the slope on the side of the bypass. It also hit an EB post before coming to a halt,” police said. Three people at the bus stand and seven, who were travelling in the bus, suffered injuries.
