Sanitary workers protest attack by drunken youth

Hundreds of sanitary workers staged a protest in front of Chengalpattu municipality on Friday demanding action against a group of youngsters who attacked a few of them in Chengalpattu on Thursday evening.

Police said that a group of sanitary workers were attacked by four drunken youths on Thursday evening while they were carrying out cleaning works in Chengalpattu town. The youths had abused the cleanliness workers verbally and also attacked them and damaged the garbage collection vehicle. The workers informed the Chengalpattu municipality and based on a complaint from the municipality, the Chengalpattu Town police arrested one of them.

On Friday morning, hundreds of sanitary workers gathered in front of the municipality office and demanded action against the accused and ensuring safety for the workers. The municipal officials and the Chengalpattu police convinced them and promised necessary action. After that, the workers dispersed and resumed their work.
