The aorta is the largest blood vessel in the body and is the blood vessel that carries oxygenrich blood away from the heart to all parts of the body. S K, who hails from Hyderabad had weathered a stormy course when he had a previous surgery on his heart several years ago. He was recently diagnosed with a dissection and aneurysm of his aortic arch. He consulted many hospitals and all of them declared that open surgery was too risky for him.

Finally, when he came to SIMS, the aortic team here informed that endovascular procedures and hybrid procedures (combining open and endovascular) was the answer to his problem. The graft kit for the procedure was flown in from Israel. A model of the patient’s aorta was made on a rubber mound. The aortic team, performed this highly complex procedure on the rubber model to ensure that it was safe for the patient. When they were certain that this could be done, they proceeded to treating the patient.

Dr V V Bashi who heads the aortic team, initially did an operation on the patient’s neck to divert the blood vessels to the brain and head. After a few days, Dr Gopalamurugan performed the endovascular procedure which involved a custom-made stent graft for the patient’s aortic arch being introduced into the patient’s aorta. The procedure lasted for five hours and was declared successful. SK was discharged after a few days.
