CHENNAI: Chennai police arrested two persons in connection with the knifepoint robbery of a businessman's family in their Puzhal home early Friday morning in which the gang decamped with Rs 25 lakh in cash and 13 sovereigns of gold jewellery.

The incident occurred at the residence of textile businessman Vijayakumar in the Mahaveer Garden area on Jan 30. He lives there with his wife Vasantha, their two daughters, and his mother. Vijayakumar runs a garment business in Manipur, police said.

According to police sources, the robbery unfolded in the early hours of Friday. When Vasantha went to open the front door, she was confronted by several masked men armed with a knife. They forced their way inside, threatened the family, and proceeded to tie the hands and legs of all five family members, also gagging them to prevent any cries for help.

The assailants then ransacked the house, specifically targeting a steel bureau from which they stole the cash and gold.

Puzhal Police, who had registered a case in connection with the incident, have arrested two men- Rahul (28) of Ennore and Praveen Kumar (26) of Puzhal. However, the stolen items are yet to be recovered. Search is underway for the absconding men who were part of the gang. Rahul and Praveen were produced before a magistrate and remanded to judicial custody.
