Recalling the incident that happened on May 14, Bharath Surya, a volunteer with Happy Paws, Mogappair, said they used to feed stray dogs during the lockdown. However, a family in the neighbourhood opposed this, asking the volunteers not to feed the strays.

“Around 9 pm on May 14, as the dogs were fighting and barking, the man and his son kicked one of the dogs. Seeing this, the puppy went under a parked car, but they chased and attacked it with a rod, which hit the puppy’s left eye and it popped out,” said Surya. After some neighbours said they saw the man hitting the dog, the organisation filed a complaint with the local police. They claimed that the police checked the CCTV footage, which recorded the attack.

Surya said the puppy is about a month old. His left eye was removed by surgery, and is still in a critical condition.
