Only 5,000 use Metro Rail on 1st day of reopening

On the first day of resumption of Metro Rail services in the city after five months, only around 5,000 passengers made use of them on Monday.

According to Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL), a total of 5,033 passengers travelled on the Metro Rail on Monday. “Of the total passengers, as many as 4,869 passengers travelled using Smart Card ticketing system and 164 utilised the QR code ticketing system. Passengers can avoid queuing at Metro Stations by downloading the CMRL mobile app for using QR code ticketing system,” the CMRL said.

 It may be noted that the CMRL had managed to increase the monthly patronage close to 30 lakh before the outbreak of COVID-19 with average daily patronage of 1 lakh.

 Meanwhile, the CMRL has implemented safety measures, including mandatory face masks, thermal screening, installation of Aarogya Setu app for passengers, strict physical distancing while boarding and in lifts, sanitisers in the premise, PPE kits for metro staff and more.

 The resumption of the services is divided into two, namely Blue line and Green line. The former identifies with the Airport metro station and Washermenpet metro station, and the latter with St Thomas Mount station and Puratchi Thalaivar Dr MG Ramachandran Central Metro.

 The services were resumed in the Blue line and the Green line services will commence on Wednesday.

 “Passengers may note that there will be no direct metro train services between Puratchi Thalaivar Dr MG Ramachandran Central Metro Station and Airport Metro Station via Koyambedu. Hence passengers have to deboard at Arignar Anna Alandur Metro Station for interchange towards Airport Metro Station,” a press release said.
