No money for daughter’s fee, Kanchi man kills self

Dejected that he could not pay his daughter’s college fees after losing his job following the pandemic lockdown, a 46-year-old weaver from Kancheepuram died by suicide on Friday night.

The deceased was identified as Shankar of Ekambaranathar temple street in Kancheepuram, who earned his livelihood as a silk weaver. As the business was hit hard due to the lockdown in the past few months, Shankar lost his job and has been struggling to support his family. According to the police, Shankar has a son and a daughter. The latter is a third year student of BSc computer science at a private college in Kancheepuram. A few days ago, she had informed her parents that the college fee has to be paid. His inability to pay his daughter’s college fee left Shankar dejected. On Friday night, after the family members went to bed, Shankar killed himself, officials said. The Sivakanchi police sent the body to Kancheepuram government hospital for post-mortem examination.
