Police said Shanmugham, 56, and wife Suganya heard some noises of breaking the door at around 2 am and went downstairs to check. Soon a group of masked men entered the house with knives and sickles and locked up the two inside a toilet. The group also snatched the ornaments Suganya was wearing and threatened them against calling the police.

The gang ransacked the rooms and took away at least 40 sovereigns of jewellery and two cell phones. In the early morning, Shanmugham and Suganya came out of the toilet after breaking the door and using a spare mobile called the police. The Sunguvachatiram police team inspected the house with a sniffer dog from Kancheepuram and registered a case.
