According to data available with Central Pollution Control Board, Manali remained highly pollutant on Tuesday where PM 2.5 is 178 microgram/m3 while Alandur Bus depot was 153 microgram/m3 and IIT Madras 119 microgram/m3, which is considered unhealthy, which is against the permissible limit of 100 microgram/m3.

Whereas other residential areas in the city remained at a moderate level, within its permissible limits, including Chennai US consulate which recorded 76 microgram/m3, Velachery 86 microgram/m3 and Alandur 71 microgram/m3.

The pollution level has not decreased in Manali for past one week, and on Bhogi day, the area recorded 797 microgram/m3. However, the next day it dropped to 117 microgram/m3 and increased after two days to 126 microgram/m3.

When contacted, a senior TNPCB official said, “The pollution level was high in Manali since Bhogi. Also there are many industries in the locality. If the pollution is high across the city, then there could be other reasons such as festivities. Also, till afternoon there are many container lorries moving in the locality, so the pollution increases.”
