Police said, Sooryaprakash, a resident of Ayanavaram had gone to the Marina to meet a friend. While returning home, a man on another bike waylaid him. The man introduced himself as a police officer. He told Sooryaprakash that he was seen with a woman on the Marina and a case has been booked against him. The ‘cop’ then demanded cash from Sooryaprakash to withdraw the case.

Sooryaprakash told the ‘cop’ that he did not have any money on him. The ‘cop’ then gave his phone number to Sooryaprakash and instructed to call him on Sunday morning.

Sooryaprakash lodged a police complaint. The officials instructed him to make a call and ask the ‘cop’ to come to Purasaiwalkam. Believing the words of Sooryaprakash, the ‘cop’ came to Purasawalkam to collect the money. Police officials waiting in plain clothes caught the ‘cop’ red handed while accepting the cash. He was later identified as Karthik, a resident of Tiruverkadu. Police said Karthik, posing as a policeman, used to threaten lovers at Marina and take taking money from them. A case has been registered.
