Madurai officials issued summons

Madras High Court (Madurai Bench) had directed the officials of Madurai district administration and Madurai Corporation to appear in person at the Court regarding the encroachment case which was taken up in sou moto by the High Court.

The Registrar (Judicial) of the court has filed the Public Interest Litigation (PIL) and claimed that the general public are facing obstruction due to the encroachments made in places including Nethaji Road, Vaniyan Kinatru Lane, Bethaniyapuram, Pasumalai, Ellis Nagar, Subramaniyapuram Market, Periyar bus stand, Mattuthavani bus stand, and bypass road - Nehru Nagar junction. 

So the court should direct the respondents including the collector and the corporation commissioner to take effective steps to remove the encroachments, he prayed. The petition, in which Public Works Department (PWD) Chief Engineer, City Police Commissioner and State Highways department Divisional Engineer were included as respondents, was heard on Monday. In the judgment Court ordered Madurai RDO and Deputy Commissioner of Madurai Corporation to carry out inspection at the above said areas about encroachments and to appear at the Court on Tuesday. The officials were also directed to submit a report.
