Lobbying begins for top posts ahead of IPS reshuffle

Following a major reshuffle of senior most bureaucrats in the state, IPS officials are said to be involved in intense lobbying for coveted posts, anticipating a similar overhaul in their cadre.

Sources said an order was expected in a day or two with changes across the hierarchy, right from the heads of police force both at the state and city level. ADGP Sanjay Arora is said to be the lone runner to the post of Chennai City Commissioner of Police, as present commissioner DGP Rajendran is likely to be appointed as the state DGP.

Many senior IPS officials, who are determined to move from other parts of the state to bag significant posts in the city region, are said to be involved in lobbying with various ministers. Those serving in central and south zones might make it to Chennai region, sources added.

Meanwhile, some SPs, who are in the list of probable transfers to insignificant posts, are trying their luck through backdoor negotiations to hold on to their posts. “As always, many are keenly trying either to stay put or get law and order postings.

Additional commissioners’ posts in Chennai city are the most sought after, with many lobbying for the same,” an inside source said. The post of additional commissioner, Central Crime Branch, has been vacant after IG Nallasivam retired a few months ago.

Additional Commissioner, Headquarters, has been given additional charge of CCB. Now many IGs are eyeing this coveted post. Meanwhile, a former police commissioner wants to head the state intelligence force. However, no decision has been taken so far.

According to sources, DGP law and order may be given the additional charge of state intelligence. Several deputy commissioners in Chennai city would also be transferred. Sources said many officials who had been sidelined after AIADMK came to power will remain in insignificant posts.

“There are a set of officials who do not approach political leaders for getting the posts they wanted. These officials will continue to be where they are at present. Only those who use their political influence get the posts they want. However, in the case of DGP and City Commissioner of Police, such lobbying does not take place,” a senior police official said.
